A freelance e-commerce manager is a digital expert who supports companies in their e-commerce journey.

Their role involves organizing and executing vital administrative tasks essential for maintaining a thriving website.

This may entail coordinating the activities of various digital specialists, such as designers, content writers, and affiliates, but also web developers, performance agencies.

Additionally, they ensure that product descriptions and attributes are accurate, and blog posts are regularly updated.

Their primary objective is to keep websites current and continually enhance service, sales, and performance.

Freelance E-Commerce Manager For Small Businesses

Who needs to hire a Freelance e-commerce manager?

Businesses that have no time for e-commerce.

It’s not uncommon for small B2B or B2C businesses to have an e-commerce website that nobody has time to update.

Owners, managers, and employees often juggle multiple responsibilities with limited resources.

Without dedicated management, the e-commerce website can quickly become neglected, with outdated products, misconfigured modules, and missed opportunities.

If this scenario sounds familiar, it may be time to hire a freelance e-commerce manager!

Business that need flexibility.

Some businesses experience significant fluctuations in workload, sales, and turnover due to seasonal trends, sales cycles, or other factors.

Managing such variability can be challenging, but hiring a freelance e-commerce manager offers a flexible solution.

By periodically engaging an independent e-commerce manager, businesses can benefit from ongoing website management without the commitment of a full-time hire.

What can you expect?

How do you hire a freelance e-commerce manager?

When adding a consulting e-commerce manager to your team, the typical process involves:

  1. Initial Consultation
We’ll have an introductory call to determine if we’re a good fit for your needs. We’ll need to understand your objectives and expectations, as well as the background and history of the e-commerce website.
  2. Sign-off and onboarding
As we familiarize ourselves with your company, partners, and technology, we’ll require some of your time to answer questions and share information.
  3. Execution phase
The work will commence in earnest, with regular updates and alignment with you throughout the process. We’ll effectively be a part of your team.
  4. Hand over
E-commerce management is an ongoing activity. If, at some point, you decide you want to bring this in-house, we’ll facilitate a smooth handover to ensure continuity of management.

An e-commerce manager will have a more holistic approach, including operative, day-to-day tasks related to optimizing or running your e-commerce website. For example, working with your admins to create new products.

An e-commerce PROJECT manager will focus on more development-oriented activities to achieve specific goals. For example, coordinate with web devs to install a new payment module, then set it up and test it prior to handing this over to you for approval.

Sometimes the line between the two gets blurred, and a client might need both services. For example, an e-commerce PROJECT manager finished to install a new blog module, but you still need an e-commerce manager to populate it.

Netsu can help you with both, with Retainer or Ad Hoc engagements.

We typically work with small businesses that are already established and trading offline.

Our ideal client might be at the beginning of their e-commerce adventure or be already selling online.

B2B companies, often family owned, are the ones we have worked with the most. Some of them also operated a B2C website/channel.

In anything we do at Netsu, we have an informal, hands-on approach. We prefer practice to theory, action to talking. If anyone makes a mistake, we want to focus on finding a solution rather than a culprit.

We see ourselves as part of your team, and we prefer environments were the communication is friendly and open, without politics or grandstanding.

At Netsu, we are platform-agnostic.

We are more experienced in Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce, but we have helped clients with WordPress / WooCommerce and Shopify as well.

As we tent to work on the smaller end of the SMB scale, we typically don’t work with entry-level platforms like Wix or complex enterprise installations.

In the long term, successful e-commerce companies develop a strong in-house team comprising e-commerce managers, designers, developers, etc.

Yet, at many stages of a company’s lifespan, it might be way more beneficial to be able to count on a freelance. This can still grow in a long-term relationship, with all the advantages that come with familiarity, with the bonus that the engagement (and costs) can be scaled up or down.

Netsu is a fully remote company, with a team distributed in the UK (Edinburgh), Italy (Milan), and Poland (Poznan).

We recognize the value of meeting in person, but we don’t want to pass over to you any excessive travel costs.

If the chance arises (or if you are happy to cover travel costs), we will be happy to meet in person.

If you have any, we are happy to use your existing communication tools.

Typically, communication works with a project management program like Jira or Monday.com. Instant messaging, like Slack, is usually not enough as information can get lost.

We will also have regular catch-up calls.

We don’t code.

We will cooperate with the web developers of your choice, or we will find the ones that fit your needs. These can be offshore or in-country, depending on your requirements.
